Abdominoplasty

Abdomen

For many women (and men) the abdomen is a problem area. Over the years, the abdominal wall becomes looser as the skin loses its elasticity. In addition, there are factors such as pregnancies, weight gain and weight loss, local fat deposits, etc.

After significant weight loss, a so-called 'fat apron' can develop: the excess skin and subcutaneous fat tissue hang like an apron on the lower abdomen.

This can result in:

  • Psychological issues such as shame and low self-esteem

  • Physical issues such as back pain and constipation

  • As well as practical problems in finding suitable clothing.

However, an abdominoplasty is not a way to lose weight. On the contrary, if you are overweight, it is important to first reach (and maintain) a healthy weight. Only then can you decide to undergo a surgical procedure. There are several options, but your surgeon will discuss with you after a physical examination which type of treatment is most suitable for you.

Mini-abdominoplasty

If the skin is less elastic and the excess skin (especially under the navel) is not too extensive, a mini-abdominoplasty may be the solution, possibly combined with liposuction.

The procedure involves an incision in the lower abdomen below the bikini line. The abdominal wall is detached up to the navel and pulled tightly downward. The excess skin is removed, and everything is neatly sutured. Sometimes a drain is placed.

The procedure takes approximately 75 minutes and is performed under general anesthesia.

Extensive abdominoplasty

When there is a significant amount of excess skin and poor skin elasticity, an extensive abdominoplasty offers the best solution, possibly combined with liposuction.

The abdominal wall is released through a large incision extending from below the bikini line to the rib cage, during which the navel is also detached. The skin is tightened, the excess skin is removed, and the navel is repositioned through a new opening and carefully sutured. Drains are used to allow excess wound fluid to drain.

The procedure is always performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 90 to 120 minutes.

In some cases, you are entitled to partial reimbursement from your health insurance fund and your hospital insurance.

After the procedure

The incision will be covered with bandages, and you will be given an abdominal support belt to wear for one month.
This will help support your abdomen and minimize swelling.

Once you are awake enough to leave the recovery room, you will be taken to your room in the outpatient clinic or the nursing ward.
You will usually stay overnight. The next day, you may go home, accompanied by a driver.

We will provide you with a letter with tips and instructions to ensure a smooth healing process.

The drains will be removed after a maximum of 3 days, the stitches after a week. You will receive an appointment for this.
